Imagine! School Age Services 3rd Annual Art Show Celebrates Neurodiversity
Imagine!, an organization that provides support services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, has been one of our Program Partners since 2018. Earlier this month Imagine! School Age Services held its 3rd annual art show in the gallery space at the Sterling Circle Membership Studio.
Molly- a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist at Imagine! School Age Services- emphasized the importance of this show: "This will be our 3rd annual art show, and it is an important celebration of art, community, and neurodiversity. Art is deeply personal, and there [is no] linear way to engage in it, just like there [is no] linear way to engage with our communities. The art show is a reminder that things can be authentic and beautiful without being expected. Our hope is that the art show highlights all our artists' unique personalities and perspectives."
Our partnership with Imagine! is one of the many Recreation Therapy activities Imagine! offers, joining Studio Arts Boulder (SAB) for monthly classes and summer camps.
"Imagine! participants have been able to explore the art of hand building, obtain sensory rewards from working with clay, identify a new leisure interest and community resource. All the SAB staff are inclusive, adaptive, and flexible, exuding kindness and meeting participants where they are," said Molly.
Imagine! also offers consulting services for businesses looking to improve the accessibility of their buildings.
"Without having the means to access community spaces, individuals can not fully participate in their communities. True accessibility goes beyond accessible parking spaces and restrooms, however. True accessibility means having access to resources and supports that make the space welcoming and approachable for all. This could look like low-sensory rooms, signs that contain visuals or larger type, Hoyer lifts and changing tables, or adaptive pottery wheels."
They are helping us address accessibility opportunities at the Membership Studio and the new Capital Expansion Building.
The Imagine! art show was held on Saturday, April 15th, from 11 am to 2 pm at 3063 Sterling Cir. Boulder, CO 80301.
